Blue Jays Shut Down Yimi García for Season as Veteran Reliever Set for Elbow Surgery
The Toronto Blue Jays announced Friday that relief pitcher Yimi García will be sidelined for the remainder of the 2025 season after medical staff determined he requires surgery on his right elbow. The procedure, aimed at clearing out scar tissue, will officially close the book on his campaign.
Manager John Schneider admitted the timing is frustrating for both García and the team. “It sucks. Sucks for him, sucks for us, but it just kind of got to that point,” Schneider said, noting the decision was made to protect the pitcher’s long-term health.
Despite the setback, there is optimism within the organization that García, 35, will make a full recovery and return in time for spring training in 2026. The veteran has been a reliable presence in the Blue Jays’ bullpen since joining the team, bringing both experience and consistency in late-game situations.
García wraps up his 2025 season with a 1–2 record, a 3.86 ERA, 25 strikeouts, and three saves over 21 innings. His 1.19 WHIP highlights his effectiveness at keeping hitters off base, making his absence a notable loss for Toronto as they push through the remainder of the schedule.
