York Regional Police say a 30-year-old man is facing serious charges after allegedly pretending to be a rideshare driver before kidnapping and sexually assaulting a woman in Vaughan earlier this week.

According to investigators, the incident happened shortly after 3 a.m. Monday near Major Mackenzie Drive West and Jane Street. Police allege a man approached a woman waiting for a ride and told her he was a rideshare driver. He then offered to take her home.

Instead of driving her to her destination, police say he pulled into a parking lot along Major Mackenzie Drive West, where he sexually assaulted her. The suspect allegedly threatened the victim before forcing her out of the vehicle and fleeing the scene.

Officers responding to the woman’s call for help located the suspect vehicle a short time later. The driver was arrested without incident.

Police have identified the accused as 30-year-old Mohammad Shaqueel Zolmay. He is now charged with kidnapping, sexual assault, and uttering threats.

Investigators released a photo of Zolmay on Friday, saying they believe there may be other victims who have not yet come forward.
