A tragic incident unfolded on Thursday, August 21, 2025, when Toronto police were called to Scarborough Town Centre following reports of an injured male. Officers arrived around 1:51 p.m. and discovered a man in his 20s inside a family washroom near the lower-level food court. Despite the quick arrival of emergency crews, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. A firearm was located nearby, prompting investigators to immediately treat the case as a suspicious death.

Toronto police said no gunfire was reported by witnesses inside the busy shopping mall prior to the discovery. Acting Inspector Baheer Sarvanandan noted that investigators believe a single shot may have been fired, but because it happened in a confined space, it may have gone unnoticed by shoppers. This has led to uncertainty about exactly when the shooting occurred.

The Homicide Unit has been notified and is monitoring the case, though the investigation has not yet been officially classified as a homicide. Forensic teams remained on scene throughout the afternoon, reviewing surveillance footage and collecting evidence to piece together the victim’s final moments.

Despite the alarming discovery, police emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to public safety. The mall remained open to shoppers while officers secured the washroom area and restricted access to parts of the lower level. Many visitors expressed surprise that such an incident could occur inside one of the city’s busiest shopping centres, with some noting that they had not heard or seen anything unusual until police arrived.
