Two unauthorized magic mushroom storefronts have been shut down in downtown Barrie, with one closed through enforcement and the other via eviction — both actions taking place Thursday and Friday on Dunlop Street.

The businesses, identified as Shroomyz (66 Dunlop St. E.) and Microzoomiez (15 Dunlop St. E.), were found selling psilocybin-based products, which are illegal under Canadian law.

On Friday, Barrie Police’s drug unit executed a search warrant at one of the locations, seizing a range of unauthorized substances. Officers also removed storefront signage and laid multiple drug-related charges.

A day earlier, officers assisted with an eviction at the second location, where locks were changed and signs removed to ensure the business was fully shut down.

Barrie Police say they are working closely with city officials, along with provincial and federal agencies, to stop the open sale of psilocybin in the city’s downtown core.

“We know the community is concerned about the presence of these illegal shops,” said Police Chief Rich Johnston. “Our goal is to ensure the downtown remains a safe and welcoming space for everyone.”

Authorities warn that landlords who allow illegal drug activity on their property could face serious legal and financial consequences. Police have pledged to use all available legal tools to stop the sale of unregulated psychedelic substances.

Psilocybin — commonly referred to as “magic mushrooms” or “shrooms” — remains a Schedule III substance under Canada’s Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. While research into its potential medical use is growing, no psilocybin-based products are currently approved for therapeutic use in Canada.

The federal government maintains that clinical trials remain the safest and most appropriate pathway for psilocybin research and development.
