A suspected grenade triggered a temporary lockdown in Toronto’s downtown core early Saturday morning, prompting a swift response from police and the city’s Explosive Disposal Unit.
Toronto Police Operations reported receiving a call around 8:47 a.m. regarding a suspicious object resembling a grenade in Harold Town Park, located near Church Street and Yonge Street. Officers quickly arrived at the scene and cordoned off the area to ensure public safety.
As a precaution, Church Street was closed in both directions from Park to Yonge while the Explosive Disposal Unit assessed the object.
By approximately 10:00 a.m., police confirmed the item was not an active explosive and had been deemed safe. The road closures were lifted shortly thereafter, and normal traffic flow resumed. No injuries were reported during the incident.
Toronto Police have not confirmed the nature or origin of the object but continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the scare. The quick response by law enforcement helped minimize disruption in a typically busy section of the city.
Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious items to police immediately.
