A major overnight fire tore through Hamilton’s long-shuttered Emerald Lodge care facility early Thursday, causing up to $2 million in damage.

Emergency crews were dispatched to 83 Emerald Street South, between Main Street East and Hunter Street East, shortly after 1 a.m. after reports of a structure fire.

“Flames had already fully engulfed the third floor and roof when the first unit arrived,” said Hamilton Fire Chief David Cunliffe in a public statement.

More than 50 firefighters were called in as the fire intensified. Dramatic footage from the scene showed thick smoke and flames ripping through the roof of the three-storey residential building, which has been vacant for years.

Crews managed to search the main and second floors, but advancing flames and dangerous structural conditions made the upper levels inaccessible.

Firefighters were ordered out due to the instability of the roof. Just moments after they exited, parts of the roof collapsed,” said Cunliffe.

Firefighters then switched to exterior suppression tactics, using aerial ladders and high-volume hoses. While the bulk of the blaze was eventually knocked down, lingering hot spots remained in the attic area.

Hamilton Fire’s drone team used thermal imaging to locate remaining heat sources, while heavy machinery was brought in to break through areas that couldn’t be safely reached by hand.

Cunliffe described the damage as “significant,” estimating losses between $1.5 to $2 million. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, and the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office has launched an investigation.
