Convicted Killer Recaptured After Bold Robberies in Montreal—Escaped Inmate Arrested Weeks Later

Montreal police have recaptured 69-year-old Lori Bill Germa, a convicted murderer who escaped from a minimum-security prison earlier this month—and shockingly returned to the streets to commit two armed robberies.
Germa was serving a life sentence for first-degree murder dating back to 1992. On July 5, he was discovered missing during a routine inmate count at the Archambault Institution, located north of Montreal. Authorities quickly launched a manhunt, with Ontario Provincial Police warning residents he could be headed toward southwestern Ontario.
But instead of laying low, Germa brazenly returned to Montreal’s Guy Street, where he allegedly robbed the same financial institution twice—first on July 19, then again on July 22. According to investigators, he stole $400 and $500 in marked bills during the two incidents.
After nearly three weeks on the run, his freedom came to an end early Friday morning, July 25, when he was arrested by Montreal police around 7:45 a.m. The arrest was confirmed by both Correctional Service Canada and the SPVM.

Germa now faces new robbery charges in addition to his original murder conviction. The incident has raised serious concerns about inmate supervision and public safety regarding minimum-security escapes.
