CALGARY — Tragedy struck Mahogany Lake on Wednesday evening when two men, both in their early 20s, drowned while swimming in the southeast Calgary community lake.

Emergency crews were called shortly after 5 p.m. when witnesses saw a man struggling in the water before disappearing beneath the surface. The Calgary Fire Department’s aquatic rescue team, assisted by volunteers from the Southern Alberta Underwater Search Team, launched an urgent search using divers and underwater cameras.

During the operation, personal belongings were discovered near the shoreline, raising concerns about a second missing individual. Rescuers later confirmed the worst: both men were located and pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

One of the victims has been identified as Caelan Escalante, remembered by his church community as a kindhearted young man “full of light” who had recently joined the church staff. The second victim’s identity has not yet been released.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, local residents and officials are renewing calls for stronger safety measures at Mahogany Lake, including the introduction of lifeguards and tighter supervision protocols.
