Barrie Tim Hortons Hepatitis Alert: Was Your Morning Coffee Contaminated?

A public health warning has been issued after a staff member at a Tim Hortons in Barrie, Ontario, tested positive for hepatitis A — raising concerns for anyone who grabbed a coffee, snack, or meal at the location.

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) confirmed the case involves a food handler who worked at the Tim Hortons located at 181 Livingstone Street East. Officials say anyone who consumed food or beverages from this location between May 17 and June 3 could potentially have been exposed to the virus.

While the risk of infection is considered low, the health unit is urging people who visited the location during the specified time to get a hepatitis A vaccine as a precaution. SMDHU is now operating special post-exposure vaccination clinics to assist anyone potentially affected.

“There is no ongoing risk at the restaurant,” the agency confirmed, noting that cleaning protocols have been followed and the staff member is no longer working while under care.

Hepatitis A is a highly contagious liver infection spread through contact with contaminated food, water, or surfaces. Symptoms may include fever, fatigue, nausea, abdominal pain, and jaundice — often appearing 15 to 50 days after exposure.

Those concerned about possible exposure are encouraged to visit the SMDHU website or contact their local health provider for vaccination options and further information.
