A dramatic incident unfolded in Mississauga Tuesday evening when a MiWay bus caught fire, sending thick smoke into the air and sparking panic onboard. The fire broke out around 6 p.m. near Eglinton Avenue and The Chase, west of Mississauga Road.
According to Irene McCutcheon with the City of Mississauga, five passengers were on the MiWay bus at the time of the fire.
“The operator ensured the safety of themselves and all five passengers. Everyone evacuated safely from the vehicle,” she said in a statement.
Images from the scene show the back of the MiWay bus badly burned, with visible scorch marks and emergency crews working at the site.
Eyewitnesses say the fire appeared to originate from the rear of the bus, which was soon engulfed in flames. No injuries were reported, but the damage to the vehicle was severe.
The cause of the MiWay bus fire remains under investigation, but thanks to the swift action of the driver, what could have been a tragedy ended in a safe escape for all on board.
