Brampton, Ontario Peel Police have arrested a 29-year-old man accused of sending a chilling death threat to Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown and his family.

According to a police statement released Wednesday, the suspect, Kanwarjyot Singh Manoria, was taken into custody on Tuesday following the execution of multiple search warrants. Investigators also seized several electronic devices during the arrest. Manoria is charged with uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm.

The threat was reportedly made via email to the Mayor’s office, specifically referencing both his wife and young son. Mayor Brown revealed that the suspect attempted to hide his IP address by using a server based in Sweden.

“I don’t know this individual,” said Mayor Brown. “It’s not clear why my family and I were targeted.” While some speculated that the threat could be linked to the Mayor’s vocal support of the Tamil community, police sources confirmed this was not the case.

Due to the nature of the threat, a dedicated police security detail was assigned to protect the Mayor’s home and family. Brown said Peel Police provided him with a photo of the suspect prior to the arrest.

Police currently believe the accused acted alone and does not pose an ongoing threat to the Mayor, his family, or the public.

Mayor Brown, visibly shaken, shared that this is not the first time he’s been threatened. “I received a death threat four or five years ago when I first became Mayor. But this time, it’s different — my five-year-old son was also mentioned. That makes it far more disturbing,” he said.

“I chose a public life. I signed up to put my name on a ballot and appear on radio and TV. But my family didn’t sign up for this,” Brown added, calling the situation “deeply unsettling.”

Manoria is currently in custody awaiting a bail hearing.
